Jailer 2 opens in theaters with praise for Rajinikanth and criticism of its pacing

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 opened in theaters on October 15 as a sequel to the 2023 film Jailer.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, it follows Muthuvel Pandian as an idol-trading group seeks revenge and tries to recover hidden containers of idols.

The story is set three months after the first film, with Muthuvel and the group’s leaders drawn into a wider conflict.

Reviews praised Rajinikanth’s commanding screen presence, along with the film’s action-comedy moments and star cameos.

They also highlighted Anirudh Ravichander’s music and the way it adds impact to the heroic scenes.

The main criticism was that the story takes time to build, with slower stretches affecting the film’s momentum.

One review gave it four out of five stars, while another offered only an early impression based on the first 40 minutes and said the storytelling was still warming up.

The biggest drawback of Jailer 2 is the underwhelming and dull moments in both the first and second halves of the film.

The world-building demands patience, and the narrative could certainly do with a little more urgency.

Rajinikanth has arrived, the swag has reported for duty, and the throne is very much occupied.
