Could a person survive being swallowed by a sperm whale?

The film Whalefall follows a diver swallowed by a sperm whale and racing to escape before his scuba tank runs out of air.

Marine experts say only a very large adult male sperm whale could physically swallow a person.

Most other whales cannot: humpbacks may engulf someone in their mouths, but their throats are too narrow to swallow a human.

No confirmed case of a person swallowed by a wild whale is documented by the specialists cited.

Inside a whale, a person would face darkness, cramped space, digestive fluids and little breathable air once the tank was empty.

Experts also warn that the animal’s movements could cause serious injury or drowning.

Survival as shown in the film is extremely unlikely, even though the scenario is physically possible in rare circumstances.
