Rough driving is the top complaint among Seoul taxi passengers
A Seoul survey found reckless driving was passengers’ top complaint about taxi drivers.
The online survey asked 1,038 residents about taxi service from October 16 to November 3, 2023.
One in five respondents named reckless driving, slightly ahead of passengers being refused service at 19.1%.
Rudeness, unpleasant smells and unnecessary conversation were other common complaints.
Many respondents said higher fares had not eased taxi shortages: 42.7% said fare increases had not helped, while 16.7% said they had.
Nearly half did not agree that service had improved after fares rose, and only 8.5% agreed.
Foreign passengers also faced language barriers in taxi apps; among app users surveyed at Seoul-area airports, 44.5% said entering addresses in another language was difficult.
The Seoul Research Institute said taxi driver training and evaluation are needed to help prevent reckless driving.
Rough driving was the leading complaint among passengers in a survey about Seoul taxi drivers, cited by 20.8% of respondents.
Refusing passengers was the next most common complaint, followed by unkindness and unpleasant smells.
The survey also found that many respondents did not think taxi fare increases had eased difficulty finding a taxi or improved service.
Foreign passengers reported problems using taxi-hailing apps, especially entering addresses in a foreign language.
