Auditor Puts State Loss in Indonesia Hajj Quota Case at Rp622 Billion

A state auditor told a Jakarta court that alleged corruption involving extra Hajj quotas caused Rp622 billion in losses.

The case concerns Indonesia’s special Hajj pilgrimage arrangements in 2023 and 2024.

Former religious affairs minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and three others are on trial in the case.

The auditor said the loss calculation covered improper earnings from 8,151 pilgrims, sales of special Hajj staff quotas, and fees paid to speed up quota allocation.

The largest part was Rp438.2 billion in earnings the auditor said were not entitled to be received; the other amounts were about Rp40 billion from staff quota sales and Rp143.9 billion in acceleration fees.

The auditor said the fees went to various officials and parties, including ministry employees and Hajj travel associations.

The testimony was given during a corruption trial in Jakarta, and the hearing’s next steps were not specified.
