China proposes tougher testing rules for electric cars

Four Chinese government departments have proposed tougher testing rules for new cars after concerns that some vehicles are developed too quickly.

The draft notice, issued on October 10, covers cars including new-energy vehicles and is open for comment.

It would require at least 30,000 kilometres of reliability testing and at least one year of environmental testing, including two winters and one summer.

The proposal also calls for safety reviews of features such as hidden door handles and zero-gravity seats before they are used.

Some carmakers have begun reviewing their practices, while the draft would shift safety checks from after launch to early development.

This matters because shortened testing can leave faults in systems such as brakes, batteries and door locks, putting drivers and passengers at risk.

The proposed rules would make sufficient testing part of the approval process for new models; the notice is still a draft.
