Spain’s rural tourism grows slowly as foreign demand rises

Spain’s rural tourism sector has moved beyond its pandemic-era boom and is now growing at a more moderate pace.

Overnight stays have risen by an average of 1.6% a year, while average occupancy across the sector remains below 20%.

From January to August 2026, rural accommodation recorded 9.43 million overnight stays, up 2.9% from the same period a year earlier.

The increase came from non-residents, whose stays rose 12.1%, while stays by people living in Spain fell 0.9%.

Rural accommodation prices climbed 31% between 2019 and 2025, compared with a 22% rise in general consumer prices.

The sector’s challenges include attracting more domestic visitors, reducing seasonal swings and offering experiences linked to local food and places to stay competitive.

Spain’s statistics office is due to publish September figures on November 3.
