Worker dies after metal beam falls at Florence high-speed rail site

A worker died at a high-speed rail construction site in Florence, Italy, on Thursday.

The worker was Ayoub Abourabil, a 31-year-old crane operator of Moroccan origin who lived in Florence.

A heavy metal beam reportedly came loose during a maneuver and struck him while he was on a vehicle trailer, according to an initial reconstruction.

Three other workers were taken to hospital after the incident.

Police and workplace inspectors are investigating how the beam became detached.

The site is for a planned high-speed rail station, and building workers' unions called a one-hour strike for October 19 in response to the death.
