Canva launches AI image model that plans designs before generating them

Canva has launched its first AI image model, called Canva Craft, for users around the world.

Unlike a system that generates an image in one step, Craft plans the design first and then creates the image.

Canva says this two-stage process helps with complex images that need readable text or carefully placed objects.

The model can produce images at up to 2K resolution and in more than 30 aspect ratios, for uses including social media and marketing.

Craft builds on Canva's wider push into AI design tools, following prompt-based editing and the addition of layers to AI-generated images.

Canva says it trained the model on millions of human-made templates from its content library, and it ranks fourth on Design Arena's crowdsourced leaderboard.

Canva plans to add AI-agent connections and faster versions, while Craft is already available through Dream Lab in Canva.
