ASML reports strong quarter but says it cannot meet chip-machine demand
Dutch chip-machine maker ASML had a very strong third quarter, with sales of about €11.6 billion and profit of nearly €5 billion.
The company supplies equipment to chipmakers including TSMC, Samsung and Intel.
Investment in artificial intelligence is driving demand for chips and the machines used to make them.
ASML says customers expect to fall short of chip demand until at least 2028, and it already has orders for that year.
Customers are also asking about machines for 2029 and 2030, but ASML says its current plans to expand production will not be enough to meet demand.
The company is the only maker of machines that use extreme ultraviolet light, a key technology for producing advanced chips.
ASML plans to raise output, but may need to expand capacity further as it works to serve customers.
ASML reported record third-quarter 2026 revenue of €11.7 billion, according to BNR, while NOS reported sales of €11.6 billion.
The company made a net profit of about €5 billion in the quarter.
ASML says its production capacity will not be enough to meet demand for its chipmaking equipment.
Demand is being driven in part by investment in artificial intelligence and other technologies that require chips.
Customers are already discussing orders for 2029 and 2030, ASML chief executive Christophe Fouquet said.

What people are saying
Many conversations with customers are now about the period after 2027.
But to be honest, it is becoming increasingly clear that 30 percent in 2027 and 30 percent in 2028 will not be enough to meet our customers' demand.
All in all, I would say it was a very, very strong quarter.
