Cyberattack takes Belgium’s main tax services offline

Belgium’s finance agency took its main online tax services offline after a cyberattack this week.

The affected services include MyMinfin, used to manage tax affairs, as well as Tax-on-web and Biztax.

The shutdown came just before an October 31 filing deadline for people reporting certain types of income, including income from self-employment or foreign companies.

The filing deadline has been extended, but accounts differ on whether the new date has been announced: one gives November 16, while another says it was still to come.

The agency says there is no current indication that data was stolen, and a spokesperson said the attack was stopped before it could access applications or data; the investigation is continuing.

Services are being restored in an isolated environment to reduce further risks, while other government applications remain fully or partly available.
