Mayhem 10 drone to combine satellite, cellular and radio links

AeroVironment and Australia’s Elsight are integrating communications technology into the Mayhem 10 military drone.

The system, called Halo, combines satellite, cellular and point-to-point radio links into one connection.

If one link weakens, Halo can use other available links so operators do not have to switch networks manually.

This could help the drone stay connected when terrain blocks signals, infrastructure is damaged or electronic warfare disrupts communications.

Mayhem 10 has an open, modular design and can be configured for roles including surveillance, electronic warfare and communications relay.

The integration aims to make control and data links more dependable when military communications are disrupted.

But network bonding cannot guarantee uninterrupted service, and the companies have not disclosed performance tests against deliberate interference.

Integration work is under way, with no completion date or operational-service timeline announced.
