Bihar approves study to map flood-prone areas along three rivers
Bihar’s cabinet approved a study to map flood-prone areas along the Kosi, Gandak and Sone rivers, which flow into the Ganga.
The state’s Water Resources Department will sign an agreement with the National Institute of Hydrology in Roorkee to carry out the work.
The study is estimated to cost ₹1.99 crore, and the cabinet also approved a separate plan to assess the safety and condition of 24 dams across Bihar.
That plan will include emergency response plans and operating manuals, as well as surveys of reservoirs and checks of dam structures.
Bihar’s rivers carry heavy silt, and updated assessments are needed to check storage capacity and safe operation during monsoon floods.
The dam assessment is expected to take eight months and cost ₹8.39 crore, while the flood study is intended to help guide development and reduce deaths and property damage in flood-affected areas.
