Bonnie Garmus’s new novel follows a young poet in 1980s New York

Bonnie Garmus’s follow-up novel is called Peck & Peck, after her bestselling debut, Lessons in Chemistry.

It follows Batter Gray, an aspiring poet from California, who cares more about poetry than the financially secure career his parents want for him.

The story takes place in the 1980s world of New York poetry publishing, centered on a prestigious magazine with an unusual office and staff.

Batter gets a job at the magazine, but starts out in its basement making photocopies.

He soon becomes involved in a bitter feud between the magazine’s twin editors-in-chief.

The novel explores the conflict between artistic originality and conformity, and the question of how art matters when poets struggle to earn a living.

What people are saying

Bonnie Garmusnovelist
That’s about the time I started imagining a story about someone who, like my teacher, instinctively knew which poems were good and which weren’t (because who does? How can you tell?)

I thought my character would have to be young, unsuccessful, idealistic, and would somehow become the deciding factor in the battle between originality and conformity.
