Lung cancer deaths fall, but cases among women continue to rise

Lung cancer mortality has fallen by up to 24% globally over the past 10 to 15 years, with larger declines among people aged 20 to 49.

Yet five-year survival remains low: 16% for men and 23% for women.

Cases among women are still increasing, according to Walce, a European lung cancer association founded in 2006.

The association is marking its 20th anniversary with four days of events in Turin, Italy, bringing together patients, caregivers and health professionals.

The events focus on research, treatment and prevention, including a public campaign about smoking risks.

Walce says it wants to strengthen prevention, make screening routine for people at high risk and reduce inequalities in access to care.

Its work will continue beyond the anniversary, with those goals set as priorities for the coming years.
