Chad and Algeria discuss cooperation at meeting in N'Djamena

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno met Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf at the presidential palace in N'Djamena.

The two sides discussed stronger cooperation between Chad and Algeria and the implementation of agreements signed during Deby's visit to Algiers last year.

Attaf said both countries face shared challenges involving development, security and stability in the Sahel-Saharan region.

Algeria is seeking to regain influence in the Sahel, and it deployed troops to Niger this week, according to observers cited in the story.

Chad and Niger share a border, making regional security a concern for Chad as well.

The talks are part of wider diplomatic contacts, with Mali's army leader General Assimi Goita expected to visit Algeria in the coming weeks.

The meeting's outcome was not detailed beyond the discussion of cooperation and existing agreements.

Our region, the Sahel-Saharan region, where we face the same issues and challenges : challenges related to development, security, and stability... I believe I can say that the people of Chad and Algeria are also working toward the same goal in this area, which is to enable our region to harness its potential for the sake of its prosperity and development,
