Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen fares to rise from 2027
JR Central and JR West will raise some Shinkansen charges on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines in Japan.
From July 1, 2027, the increase will apply to reserved-seat express surcharges on Nozomi and Mizuho trains.
Ordinary-car unreserved fares will stay unchanged, while a one-way reserved-seat trip from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka will cost ¥15,420 in the regular season, ¥700 more than now.
Green-car charges will rise on all trains from December 15, 2027; the charge for journeys of up to 600 kilometres will increase by ¥3,000, from ¥5,400 to ¥8,400.
The rail companies say the changes will help cover higher costs linked to inflation and maintaining safety and service.
The companies are also upgrading green-car facilities, including new seat features and a powder corner on N700S trains.
Dedicated station lounges for Supreme Class and green-car passengers are due to open in stages, beginning on December 15, 2027, at Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Kyoto, Kokura and Hakata.
JR Central and JR West will raise reserved-seat limited express fares for Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen.
The new reserved-seat fares will apply to tickets purchased from July 1, 2027, while ordinary-car non-reserved fares will remain unchanged.
Green Car fares for all trains will increase for journeys from December 15, 2027.
The companies said the changes respond to rising costs of maintaining safety and services amid inflation.
They also plan upgrades to Green Cars and dedicated passenger waiting rooms at major stations.
