Bupyeong to turn tree waste into fuel and cut disposal costs

Bupyeong District in Incheon has agreed with Cheonil Energy to reuse waste wood from street-tree pruning and the removal of hazardous trees.

Under the agreement, the company will collect the material at no charge and process it into wood chips and pellets.

The fuel will go to combined heat and power plants to replace fossil fuels such as coal.

Until now, the district paid to dispose of this waste.

It expects to reuse about 300 tonnes a year and save around 39 million won in disposal costs.

Using the waste as fuel is intended to reduce carbon emissions as well as avoid simply throwing it away.

The district says one tonne of wood pellets can replace 604.65 kilograms of coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.48 tonnes.

The agreement sets out the new collection and reuse plan, but no start date was stated.
