Parents of baby found in Beckum identified and released

Police have identified the parents of a baby found dead in Beckum, in Germany's Münsterland region.

Passers-by found the girl in a shopping bag by a field path on September 26, and investigators named her Alina.

DNA evidence led police to the father, and then to the mother; the couple live in Hamm.

The mother told investigators she hid the pregnancy and gave birth alone, and that the baby showed no signs of life.

Investigators say current findings point to a stillbirth, though accounts differ on whether this is certain: one authority spokesperson said it was probable, while another said it could not be confirmed.

An autopsy found facial bone injuries that may have been caused during birth, but their origin is unclear.

The parents were detained and later released because there is no urgent suspicion against them; the investigation into suspected manslaughter continues.
