Many newer Swiss cars may not qualify for supervised practice driving
In Switzerland, learner drivers can practise in a family car with a qualified supervisor, but the supervisor must be able to reach the handbrake easily.
That rule is in Article 27 of the road traffic ordinance and is meant to let the supervisor intervene in an emergency.
Many newer cars replace the traditional handbrake lever with an electronic button, which may be out of the passenger's reach or switch off when the driver accelerates.
A Streetlife survey found that only about a quarter of car brands in Switzerland offer models fully suited to practice lessons under the current rules.
Auto-Suisse, the association representing importers, has asked the Federal Roads Office to address the gap between the law and newer vehicle technology.
Its director says little has been done so far, while the rules may be reviewed by 2028, according to one account.
Until any change, families should check that their car meets the legal requirements before using it for learner practice.
