Former Chinese securities regulator official gets suspended death sentence

A Chinese court sentenced former securities regulator official Wang Huimin to death with a two-year reprieve on Oct.

27.

The court found that he took more than 436 million yuan in bribes in exchange for favours to companies and individuals, including help with business and fundraising.

Wang held official posts in Xinjiang and at the national securities regulator, though accounts differ on the dates of his service.

The court said the scale of the bribes and harm caused warranted the death penalty, but cited factors including his disclosure of some information and the recovery of some illicit gains in granting a reprieve.

In Chinese law, a two-year reprieve is typically followed by a commutation to life imprisonment.

The court said Wang will spend the rest of his life in prison, with no sentence reduction or parole, and ordered his personal property confiscated.
