Japan’s Communist Party moves to end opposition election cooperation policy
Japan’s Communist Party says it will stop making cooperation with other opposition parties a policy for national elections.
Party leader Tomoko Tamura announced the change in Tokyo, saying a split in a major opposition party had created a new political landscape.
The party previously sought to work with the largest opposition party and other political groups.
It now says it will focus on expanding its own support to counter Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s conservative government.
The change could further weaken political forces opposed to Takaichi.
The wording on cooperation is expected to be removed from a party resolution at its congress next year.
