Joey Loperfido Has Hip Surgery and Will Miss Astros Spring Training

Astros outfielder Joey Loperfido had surgery to treat an impingement and labral injury in his right hip.

The team says his availability for spring training will be delayed, but it has not provided a recovery timeline.

The hip problems were found shortly after the 2026 season ended; an earlier injury that put him on the injured list was a quad strain.

Loperfido has moved between Houston and Toronto during his major league career, and he returned to the Astros before the 2026 season in a trade for Jesús Sánchez.

He has had limited success at the plate in the majors, though he has performed better in the minor leagues and can play all three outfield positions.

Loperfido will be out of minor league options in 2027, meaning Houston cannot send him to the minors without first exposing him to other teams.

The Astros have several outfielders competing for roles, and the team has not said when Loperfido might return.
