Local ceasefire begins in Oleshky as strikes continue elsewhere

Russia and Ukraine began a local ceasefire around Oleshky, an occupied town in southern Ukraine.

The agreement is intended to allow humanitarian aid and evacuations for residents facing severe shortages of food, medicine and basic services.

Oleshky has been under Russian control since the early days of the full-scale invasion in 2022, and the town was badly damaged by fighting and flooding after a nearby dam was destroyed in 2023.

The ceasefire is due to last until November 1, and officials say a humanitarian corridor will be opened, though clearing mines from roads may take several days.

The truce applies only around Oleshky, not across the wider war.

Russian strikes on Kyiv killed at least one person and injured 15, while attacks elsewhere also caused deaths and injuries in Ukraine and Russia.

The local pause could ease conditions for people in Oleshky, but deadly attacks continue beyond the town.
