Alpine drivers lose Mexico GP points after yellow-flag penalties

Alpine drivers Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto were penalised after the Mexico City Grand Prix for not slowing enough under yellow flags.

Colapinto received a 10-second penalty for a single yellow flag, while Gasly’s penalty was converted from a stop-and-go into 30 seconds for an infringement under double yellow flags.

They had crossed the line in eighth and 10th, but finished 15th and 17th after the penalties.

The decisions cost Alpine both points finishes and moved Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar higher in the final standings.

Haas driver Ryo Hirakawa scored a point on his F1 debut by taking 10th place.

The Japanese driver had been called up after Haas benched Esteban Ocon on Friday night for reasons the team did not specify.

The result also gave Racing Bulls six more points in its fight with Alpine for fifth in the constructors’ championship, leaving it 35 points ahead.
