Gambia opposition leader files to run despite abuse allegations

Talib Ahmed Bensouda has filed to run in Gambia’s December 5 presidential election.

He leads the UNITE party and is a popular former mayor of Kanifing Municipality.

A government report accused him of financial improprieties and abuse of office, but his party says the claims are a political manoeuvre ahead of nominations.

If the allegations are proven, Bensouda would be disqualified from running.

The election comes amid prolonged power cuts and protests calling for President Adama Barrow to step down.

Barrow is seeking a third term, while opposition leader Ousainou Darboe has also said he will run; the official list of nominees is not yet available.
