South Korean opposition urges Lee to clarify farmland survey
People Power Party lawmakers urged President Lee Jae-myung to apologize to farmers and explain the government’s nationwide farmland survey.
The lawmakers, members of parliament’s agriculture committee, made their demands at a news conference in Seoul on October 22.
The survey is intended to examine farmland across South Korea, but the opposition says it has damaged rural economies and treated farmers as speculators.
They also criticized plans to exempt inherited land and land held by older farmers from being required to be sold, saying the policy had shifted.
The lawmakers said survey drones were mostly made in China and raised concerns that national land information may have been exposed overseas.
They also cited alleged farmland-law violations involving government and ruling-party figures, and said no one had been properly punished.
They demanded a clear explanation of the survey, an assessment of its effects and changes to the government’s agricultural policy team, warning they would keep fighting if the government did not change course.
