Mexico's year-end bonus ranges from 15 to 40 days under different labor rules

In Mexico, workers' year-end bonus, called aguinaldo, depends on which labor rules cover their job.

Private-sector workers covered by the Federal Labor Law are entitled to at least 15 days of salary.

Federal public employees are entitled to at least 40 days of salary, paid in two parts: half before December 15 and the rest by January 15.

Private employers can provide more days through individual or collective contracts, company policies, or benefits that have become a regular workplace condition.

Seniority alone does not automatically add days under the Federal Labor Law, though a collective contract can link benefits to years of service.

Once a higher benefit is part of an employee's recognized terms, an employer cannot cut it unilaterally to the legal minimum.

Workers can check their applicable labor rules and employment terms to find their entitlement; with a fixed daily wage, the payment is calculated by multiplying that wage by the number of bonus days.
