Indonesia Holds Hong Kong Forum on Migrant Workers’ Concerns

Indonesia’s government held a dialogue in Hong Kong on 1 November 2026 with Indonesian migrant workers and other Indonesian residents.

Ministers heard concerns directly from Indonesians in Hong Kong about worker protection, identity records, citizenship and violence against women.

A diaspora representative called for changes including broader dual citizenship rights and more time for children of mixed-nationality marriages to choose a citizenship.

These proposals concern citizenship rules for Indonesians abroad and were raised for the government to consider.

A Hong Kong content creator said mismatched names in workers’ records can make it harder to obtain local identity cards.

The government said it would coordinate across ministries to identify solutions, including issues that need further discussion.

The labour protection minister said migrant workers contribute to Indonesia’s economy, with remittances from Hong Kong estimated at nearly 14 trillion to 15 trillion rupiah in one half-year.

Officials said better protection and easier services are owed to workers for their contribution.
