Dutch watchdog blocks Zwanenberg’s planned Unox takeover

The Dutch competition regulator, the ACM, blocked Zwanenberg Food Group’s planned Unox takeover.

Zwanenberg wanted to buy Unox from Unilever, but the ACM said the deal would give the company too much market power.

Zwanenberg is a major maker of smoked and frankfurter sausages, producing 11,000 smoked sausages an hour in Oss.

The company is also known for making Hema’s smoked sausage, though many people in the Netherlands do not know its name.

The proposed deal would have brought Unox and Zwanenberg under one company, changing the balance in the sausage market.

The reported information does not say what either company will do next.
