LUMC emergency department partly closes for disaster drill

Leiden University Medical Center will hold a major disaster response exercise on Wednesday, November 4.

Its emergency department will be partly closed from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The department will still treat patients with specific serious emergencies, including severe heart problems, strokes, resuscitations and pregnancy complications.

The exercise will simulate a regional disaster with many people needing medical care, including people acting as victims.

It tests the hospital's plan for quickly switching from routine to crisis care and checks whether staff and services know what to do.

If demand for care in the region unexpectedly rises, regular patient care takes priority, and the exercise may be scaled back or changed.

Dutch hospitals are legally required to have a disaster response plan.
