Christian Freuding named Germany’s top military officer
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has named Army chief Christian Freuding as the Bundeswehr’s top officer.
Freuding, 55, is due to take over as inspector general in February from Carsten Breuer, who has been elected chair of NATO’s Military Committee.
The Bundeswehr is Germany’s armed forces, and the inspector general is its highest-ranking soldier.
Before leading the Army, Freuding coordinated Germany’s military aid to Ukraine and worked closely with Pistorius.
His experience includes studying Russia’s war against Ukraine and what it means for Germany’s defence.
Freuding has begun setting up the Army’s first drone regiment, and Pistorius says he has moved quickly to strengthen its capabilities.
His main task will be turning Germany’s defence plans into military capabilities across the armed forces.
Christian Freuding will become Germany’s top military officer, taking over as inspector general of the Bundeswehr in February 2027.
The 55-year-old lieutenant general currently leads the German Army and has coordinated Germany’s military aid to Ukraine.
He will succeed General Carsten Breuer, who was elected chairman of NATO’s Military Committee and is due to move to Brussels.
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius praised Freuding’s leadership and his work analysing Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Freuding has overseen measures including the establishment of the army’s first drone regiment.
