Cantareira reservoir rises to 50.69% but remains on water alert
The Cantareira system’s water level rose to 50.69% on Friday, up from 41.10% on September 30.
The reservoir system supplies about half of the São Paulo metropolitan region’s population and also serves towns including Campinas.
Even after the recovery, it will stay in the attention band through November because its stored water remains between 40% and 60%.
Under the rules, Sabesp can draw up to 31 cubic metres of water per second from the reservoirs during November.
Water authorities say the improvement is positive but does not remove the need to save water and reduce losses.
Residents, water services and other users in the areas served by the system are urged to use water carefully.
The Cantareira water system reached 50.69% of its usable capacity on Friday, October 30.
It will remain in “Attention Level 2” during November despite the increase.
The system held 41.10% of capacity on September 30, a rise of nearly 10 percentage points.
Under the rules, storage between 40% and 60% keeps the system in Level 2.
Sabesp will be allowed to withdraw up to 31 cubic metres of water per second in November.
