National Rally calls for Bank of France governor to resign over budget comments
The National Rally is demanding Emmanuel Moulin resign as governor of the Bank of France.
Moulin said France’s Constitution allows a budget to be adopted even without a majority in Parliament, pointing to possible legal procedures.
He made the comments at an International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok while urging French politicians to act on the budget.
The party says his remarks crossed a line and accused him of acting politically rather than neutrally.
The dispute comes as Parliament considers the 2027 budget and the government lacks a majority to pass it.
The budget debate matters because France needs a way to adopt its spending plan, and the government aims to reduce the public deficit to 5% of GDP next year.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon also attacked Moulin’s comments, while the National Rally has separately called for constitutional council president Richard Ferrand to leave his post.
The government has not ruled out using Article 49.3 to pass the budget without a vote, unless lawmakers bring down the government.
RN lawmaker Jean-Philippe Tanguy called for Banque de France governor Emmanuel Moulin and Constitutional Council president Richard Ferrand to leave their posts.
Tanguy accused Moulin of crossing a line by saying France’s budget could be adopted without a parliamentary majority.
He said both officials should be politically neutral and accused them of being too political.
Moulin had urged French politicians to take responsibility for adopting a budget, citing constitutional mechanisms.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon also criticised Moulin, calling his intervention an abuse of power.
