Edmonton hospital inquiry hears chronic overcrowding limits care
At a fatality inquiry in Edmonton, physician Greg Hrynchyshyn said Grey Nuns hospital has operated above capacity since at least 2024.
The inquiry is examining the death of 44-year-old Prashant Sreekumar, who died on Dec.
22, 2025, after waiting about eight hours in the emergency room with chest pain.
Hrynchyshyn said the hospital’s five general medicine units have more patients than beds, and that hiring more doctors alone cannot fix the problem.
He said about 20 to 30 per cent of beds are occupied by patients who are ready to leave but lack suitable care or accommodation outside hospital.
Delays in long-term care, rehabilitation, home care and other services can keep beds occupied and make it harder for new patients to be admitted.
The hospital is considering a high-intensity medical unit and another internal medicine team, but reducing overcrowding will be difficult without more infrastructure.
Justice Randal Brandt will examine the circumstances of Sreekumar’s death and may recommend changes to help prevent similar deaths; the inquiry is due to continue in December.
