French restaurants face a struggle to stay profitable

France’s restaurant sector is under pressure as customers cut back on spending.

Nearly 5,000 establishments have faced financial difficulties since the start of the year, and about 25 restaurants close each day.

In Strasbourg, 29-year-old Elena Zins is preparing to open her first restaurant, after investing €260,000 with her partner to take over a business.

She plans to serve Chinese dishes with an Alsatian touch and hopes to open before the city’s Christmas market.

Nearby, Maxime Rolland and his wife have found early success with a bistro they took over six months ago.

Their €26 daily menu uses simple, affordable ingredients, helping the restaurant attract diners.

The contrasting examples show the challenge facing new owners: they must draw customers while keeping prices accessible.

Obviously, purchasing power is declining at the moment. All restaurateurs are seeing their figures fall.

It’s a real challenge. There are already lots of restaurants and lots of choices. So you have to attract customers, and that isn’t easy either.
