Business group urges transparent choice for Mexico’s next INE president
Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council urged the Chamber of Deputies to make a transparent, verifiable choice for the INE’s next president.
The National Electoral Institute, known as the INE, organizes elections in Mexico, and Guadalupe Taddei resigned as its president on October 25 amid allegations about contracts and possible conflicts of interest.
The council said candidates should have electoral experience, technical ability and integrity, rather than being chosen for political reasons.
It also called for legal changes to protect the INE’s operations and strengthen collective decision-making inside the institute.
The council says the issue matters as Mexico prepares for 2027 elections involving more than 19,000 public offices, including 500 seats in the federal Chamber of Deputies and 17 governorships.
Senator Óscar Cantón Zetina said allegations should be investigated and any individual responsibility established, even after Taddei’s departure.
The Chamber of Deputies is to select the next president, while investigations into the alleged irregularities should continue.

The business group called on the Chamber of Deputies to prioritize candidates with electoral experience, technical ability and integrity over political considerations.

The request comes ahead of Mexico’s 2027 elections, which will renew more than 19,000 public posts.

What people are saying
What we have to recognize is that there is a real crisis in the National Electoral Institute. No one can hide that.
If Mrs. Taddei is responsible, along with twenty others in senior management positions, they should be thrown in jail.
But it is not enough to think that, with forgiveness, you leave and that is it. There has to be a truly exemplary punishment.
