Brazil keeps 12-and-up rating for Programa do Ratinho

Brazil’s Justice Ministry kept the 12-and-up rating for Programa do Ratinho, a show on broadcaster SBT.

The ministry cited sexual or crude language, violence and verbal abuse as reasons the programme is not recommended for children under 12.

It said these elements matter because they appear often and play a significant role in the show.

Accounts differ on how the review began: one says SBT requested a change, while the ministry’s explanation to another outlet says it was routine monitoring, not a request from the broadcaster.

The ministry recommends showing the programme on free-to-air TV from 8 p.m., but that time is not compulsory under a 2016 Supreme Court decision.

SBT can air it at another time if it displays the age rating, and the ministry gave it five days from publication of the decision to show the rating and content warnings on air.
