Indonesian Navy Secures Cargo Ship Bound for Malaysia

Indonesia’s navy secured the MV Global 88, a cargo ship carrying cigarettes intended for export to Malaysia.

The ship was stopped off Majene in West Sulawesi on October 19 and later taken to the navy base in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

The navy says the cargo is linked to a legal dispute being handled by police in East Java, and that it is assisting the police rather than formally detaining the ship.

The ship’s 12 crew members are foreign nationals and were reported to be in good health.

The ship’s lawyers say the cigarettes are legal and that the cargo and export documents are in order.

They also question whether the police complaint, which concerns an alleged fraud involving a warehouse owner, is connected to the goods on board.

Police are expected to take over the case, while the navy says the matter remains under investigation.

We are not detaining it, but securing a ship carrying cargo that is involved in a legal dispute at the East Java police, because there is a police report. We are helping the police.

The detention of the ship has no basis and there is no indication that this cargo is illegal or has administrative problems.
