Mexican groups urge higher 2027 funding for fisheries agencies
Two Mexican civil society groups are calling for more funding for fisheries agencies in the proposed 2027 federal budget.
The National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission, known as Conapesca, would receive 2.483 billion pesos, while the fisheries research institute IMIPAS would receive 477 million pesos.
The groups say both agencies have faced cuts in recent years, and the proposed amounts are far below their 2018 funding levels.
Conapesca oversees fishing across more than 11,000 kilometres of coastline, while IMIPAS provides scientific information used to guide fishing rules and conservation.
The groups warn that limited funding could weaken sustainable fishing and climate action, as well as threaten food security for millions of people.
They say stronger budgets are needed for Mexico to meet international commitments and protect the right to food and a healthy environment.
Civil society groups say Mexico’s proposed 2027 funding for its fisheries agencies is insufficient.
The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries and the Mexican Institute of Research in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture would receive 2.96 billion pesos combined.
The groups say the funding shortfall could weaken fisheries oversight, scientific research and efforts to combat illegal fishing.
They warn that the cuts could affect environmental commitments and food sovereignty and security.
