76ers lead Knicks in NBA Cup opener after strong third quarter

The Philadelphia 76ers hosted the New York Knicks in an NBA Cup group-stage game in Philadelphia on Friday.

The teams had already met once this season, when Philadelphia won 106-100 on opening night.

The Sixers entered at 4-1, while the Knicks were 2-3 and defending their NBA Cup title.

Philadelphia’s Jaylen Brown was ruled out with left knee tendinopathy, and New York’s Jose Alvarado was also out with an ankle injury.

Tyrese Maxey scored 23 points as Philadelphia stretched its lead to 14 in the third quarter.

Jalen Brunson helped New York fight back, but the Sixers led 87-82 with 6:26 left in the fourth.

The game was still in progress at that update, so the final result was not yet known.
