Felipe VI urges daily commitment to democracy ahead of Spanish elections

At the Princess of Asturias Awards in Oviedo, Spain’s King Felipe VI spoke about democracy ahead of general elections due in a little over a month.

He said voting carries a high responsibility for citizens because voters help decide the country’s political direction.

But he stressed that democracy does not end with elections and needs people to take part in civic life every day.

He said caring for democratic institutions and their rules helps protect coexistence and balance people’s different interests.

Felipe VI linked this duty to Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy, which he described as an ongoing process of learning and improvement.

His remarks came as he urged patience and experience in a world shaped by fast-moving technology and information.
