GTA Advance Was a Flawed but Important Step in Rockstar’s History

GTA Advance is a flawed entry in the Grand Theft Auto series that ran on the Game Boy Advance.

Made by Digital Eclipse and Rockstar, it is set in Liberty City before the events of GTA 3.

Its main character, Mike, turns to revenge after the mafia kills his friend Vinnie, just as they were preparing to leave the city.

The story gives Mike a more immediate reason to act than the revenge plots in some other GTA games.

The Game Boy Advance struggled to run the game, leading to poor frame rates and clunky controls.

Despite those problems, the game offers a view of Rockstar working out what the GTA series could be.

Its shortcomings helped point toward better games, though the story does not describe any next steps for the series.
