Five-year plan aims to prepare northern England uplands for climate change
The North Pennines National Landscape has set out a five-year plan to help its uplands prepare for climate change.
The area is especially exposed to rising temperatures, changing rainfall and more extreme weather.
The plan calls for protecting woodlands and restoring peat soils, which can store carbon and help improve water quality and reduce flooding downstream.
Raby Estates, one of the area's largest land managers, is working with the landscape body on wildfire prevention, including managing fuel loads and supplying firefighting equipment.
It is also using drones to help spot fires.
The plan aims to help farmers welcome visitors, including young people who may not otherwise get the chance to visit the countryside.
Local authorities will use the plan as a guide, but it is not compulsory, and the landscape body says everyone has a role in putting it into practice.
The North Pennines National Landscape (NPNL) says a five-year plan will guide efforts to prepare uplands for climate change.
The area is especially vulnerable to rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and more frequent extreme weather, NPNL said.
The plan includes protecting existing woodlands and restoring carbon-rich peat soils.
NPNL says this work could improve water quality and reduce flooding for downstream communities.

What people are saying
really significant, additional tool in our wildfire control kit
You can't make people come to the countryside and invest in the local economy, but you can help to create circumstances in which they feel this landscape is for everybody.
There's no stick here, it's all carrot
Everyone has a role to play in its implementation.
