Sheinbaum says IMSS has improved but still needs changes
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico’s IMSS health system has improved but still needs to get better.
She said new hospitals and higher numbers of general and specialist consultations show progress, and that changes should benefit people covered by the system.
The government is reviewing IMSS spending to support higher pay and improve conditions for some workers hired during the pandemic.
Sheinbaum said the main problem with medicines and medical supplies was their distribution, not their purchase.
She also announced a major effort to reduce delays in operations, some of which have been scheduled as far as four months ahead.
The IMSS director, Zoé Robledo, is due to explain the system’s situation on Tuesday.
A review of conditions at the separate ISSSTE health institute began Monday, and Sheinbaum said it has enough resources to provide care.

What people are saying
The IMSS has improved, just look at the number of new hospitals that exist, and it is demonstrated by the figures for how many consultations there are with general practitioners, how many consultations with specialists. Now, it still has to be improved further for the benefit of beneficiaries.
There was not a problem with purchasing, but rather with the distribution of medicines, medical supplies and everything required for the benefit of all IMSS beneficiaries.
And there are sufficient resources to provide care.
