Rhineland-Palatinate leader rejects SPD proposal for a pension summit
Germany’s pension reform is being debated in the Bundestag, the country’s federal parliament.
The SPD’s parliamentary leader, Matthias Miersch, proposed involving state premiers in talks before the government formally approves the reform.
He wants to ease a deadlock over the plan, including disagreement about ending unreduced pensions after 45 years of contributions.
Gordon Schnieder, the conservative state premier of Rhineland-Palatinate and chair of the state premiers’ conference, rejected the idea.
He said it was not the premiers’ job to do the work of the SPD parliamentary leader.
Schnieder said lawmakers could still adjust the pension package during parliamentary debate.
The dispute matters because Schnieder says the pension system needs changes, while the reform remains under discussion in parliament.
