Japan lawmakers discuss bear attacks and school bus safety
At a Japanese House of Representatives budget committee hearing, lawmaker Toshihide Muraoka asked Environment Minister Hiroyoshi Sasagawa about rising bear encounters and injuries.
Muraoka jokingly called Sasagawa the “bear minister,” drawing laughter before the minister replied that it was the formal title.
Sasagawa said there were 19,789 bear sighting reports from April through August, and 68 people had suffered injuries by September, including six deaths.
He said the government would work with other ministries to speed up public safety warnings.
Muraoka also urged the government to ease school bus subsidy rules in areas with bear sightings, to help protect children travelling to school.
Education Minister Yoshihiro Seki said funding for school bus support is being requested for next year’s budget, while Muraoka pressed the finance minister to secure the money.
