Japan expects 1,477 food and drink price increases in November

Prices are set to rise on 1,477 food and drink items in Japan in November, according to a survey by Teikoku Databank.

The increases will affect products including sauces, mayonnaise, bottled drinks, canned seafood and food for babies.

Seasonings account for the largest share, with 644 items, followed by 417 alcoholic drinks and beverages and 275 processed foods.

November’s total is the second-highest for that month since the survey began in 2022, and about 10 times the number recorded in November last year.

The monthly total is below 3,000 for the first time in three months, suggesting the recent wave of increases has eased, though the survey linked that wave to worsening Middle East conditions.

More than 20,000 items are expected to have risen in price during 2026, including increases already implemented, marking a second consecutive year above that level.

The survey said consumers are becoming more sensitive to prices and may have limited ability to accept further increases.
