Ulju youth stage musical about local independence fighters

Ulju youth stage musical about local independence fighters

Young people and artists in Ulju, South Korea, have created a musical about local fighters who resisted Japanese rule.

Called “The Bell of Independence,” it will be performed twice on November 1 at Ulju County Hall, with each show lasting about an hour.

The story focuses on Ipam Village and fighters Son Hu-ik and Lee U-rak, whose lives and sacrifices are less widely recognized than those of better-known figures from the region.

The village is described as having the largest number of recognized independence fighters in the Yeongnam region.

The production aims to bring attention to this overlooked local history and pass it on through arts and cooperation between generations.

The performances are free, and viewers can apply through Ulju County’s public facilities reservation service.

I hope this performance will be a meaningful time for local residents to gain a new understanding of our region's independence movement history and reflect on the noble sacrifices of independence activists and the meaning of love for the country.
