Scope keeps Germany’s AAA credit rating, citing long-term risks

Rating agency Scope has kept Germany’s credit rating at AAA, with a stable outlook.

The rating reflects the agency’s view that Germany has a very low risk of failing to repay its debt.

Scope analyst Julian Zimmermann says Germany still benefits from a large, diverse economy, substantial overseas assets and strong public institutions.

But the country faces long-term pressure from an ageing population, rising public debt and weaker economic growth.

Zimmermann says competition from Chinese products and high energy and production costs could weaken German exporters and the economy’s growth potential.

He says these risks do not currently justify lowering the rating, and the government still has time to respond.

Scope will pay close attention to the government’s announced reforms and to whether Germany can protect its competitiveness and growth.
