Hackers claim theft of 23 terabytes from Russia’s statistics agency

Russia’s state statistics agency, Rosstat, said its websites were hit by a cyberattack between Oct.

29 and Nov.

1.

The hacking groups Silent Crow and Belarusian Cyber Partisans claimed they stole 23 terabytes of data, including information on Russian military losses in the war in Ukraine.

They also said the files included census, economic and demographic information, but their claims have not been independently verified.

Rosstat said it detected suspicious activity and responded quickly, and denied that databases or legally protected information had leaked.

The agency’s main website was inaccessible when the story was published.

The attack matters because Rosstat has stopped publishing annual cause-of-death statistics, and some other data that could help assess the war’s impact are no longer public.

Russian prosecutors confirmed a cyberattack and opened a criminal investigation into unauthorized access to computer systems.
